Although satellite-based navigation systems are the preferred means for establishing location in “open” terrain, they do suffer shortcomings in areas where the satellites are obscured from the receiver, particularly by man-made structures such as buildings. In short, the performance of GNSS receivers cannot be guaranteed indoors or in densely populated “urban canyon” environments. Wi-Fi positioning is a technique that has been developed to overcome these limitations and augment GNSS-based positioning systems in just such areas.

The Spirent Training Conference in Noordwijk comprised two days rich in information with many intense talks, well-structured presentations, questions and answers and making / refreshing contacts. The location of the event was a big room with round tables – not so formal- in the noble hotel Oranje right next to the seaside. Two side walls were equipped with 3 Spirent demo systems so that everyone could get a first-hand impression. A long wall carried two screens enabling a good view at the slides from anywhere in the room.

High profile Spirent professionals presented updates on all existing and newly developed GNSS constellations and Spirents’ range of test systems. New functions, test tools and special technology tests (GNSS/INS) were comprehensibly presented in workshops and live presentations. All Spirent people were available for direct, one to one discussions and questions all the time, so that every user was able to pose their specific questions about their test cases to the right people and have their issues dealt with first hand.  All topics and questions were discussed in an open, focussed atmosphere. Users came from all over Europe, e.g. Sweden, Turkey and even Israel, working in fields like air and space, universities, mobile devices and others. Everybody I talked to said they had learned a lot and that it had been well worth coming.
